ROLE SUMMARY/PURPOSE:


The Controls Engineer is an integral part of the Renewables product and design process, reporting directly to the Engineering Manager of the Control Systems organization. This is a global engineering role where the scope includes design & enhancement of wind farm and energy storage control systems, and coordinating with renewable product line and services team on product needs.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:


- Assist development and enhancement of plant controls technologies, covering functional requirements definition, flowdown, preliminary design development & documentation.

- As part of the broader control system design, interface with the turbine and storage controls team and to incorporate operability requirements into the plant controller design.

- Assist senior plant controls engineer and work with controls product line personnel to flow down desired capability into requirements & preliminary design that can be executed through detailed design & implementation. Focus will be on next generation Plant Controller system concepts.

- Work with Fleet Reliability Operations and Renewable Services team to define plant control system needs for the installed base.

- Engage with wind turbine controls, energy storage controls, platform, and services team and investigate plant controls issues, identify & discuss with senior engineer, and implement improvements in the controls strategies.

- As a plant controls engineer and part of the broader controls team, assist/guide in conceptual, detailed design, implementation and validation of the controls features that address plant level and grid features ((voltage control, frequency control, ramp rate control, power curtailment, etc.).

- Engage in the effort of defining / documenting operability & grid constraints. This is creating the foundation on which controls architecture and approach can be modified to meet goals of improved transient response at the plant level.

- Work closely with PE and senior design engineers to develop strategy for high visibility tasks (RCA, new concepts for fast track design needs) and represent the team in discussions and reviews with renewables leadership.

- Assist in development of control algorithms for grid services including real power control, reactive power control, voltage control, etc. and execute complete design cycle (concepts, analysis, optimization, validation and coding) for controls of wind farm systems

- Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:


* BS Degree in Control Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.

* 3+ years real-time controls design or modeling experience.

* Proficiency in control system software requirements definition, requirements flowdown and design.

* At least 2 years of programming experience in C/C++, Matlab/Simulink, or IEC-61131 languages

* Experience in an engineering position dealing with controls and electrical and electronic system design

* Fluent in English, both written and spoken

* Conversational German

ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS:



DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS:


- Greenbelt (internal GE) with demonstrated quality focus. Meets or exceeds schedule and quality targets.

- Masters of Science Degree in Controls Engineering, Computer, Electrical Engineering or related discipline.

- Experience in design and/or modeling of controls systems.

- 5 years of wind industry experience with a focus on plant controls systems.

- Familiar with electrical grid operation and power systems control

- Strong analytical approach to problem solving

- Ability to lead in a matrix organization

- Strong oral and written communication skills.

- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to succeed in a global team environment.

- Experience with typical controls platforms, favorable with GE's Mark-Vie platform(UCSA/B controllers)

- Strong background and experience in real-time control development

- Experience with the grid market including renewable integration and required services

- Experience with communication protocols such as CAN, MODBUS, EGD, DNP3, OPC-UA and IEC-61850

- Demonstrated process orientation in approach to work

- Experience with data acquisition systems, network and telephone-based remote monitoring, SCADA and building control systems
